Reason 4: Threat of the United States invading British North America.
In the 1860s there was quite a threat of the U.S. invading and expanding into British North America. Many colonies believed it would be much safer if they were united, so they could stop the invasion all together as one country and help each other out. During the United States Civil War, BNA had assisted the South, so they (BNA) were quite afraid that the North would attempt to invade the colonies, especially the maritime colonies. Confederation would bring the colonies together and make the country safer if an attack like this occurred.
