Opening Summary
On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act was passed, uniting the three colonies of The United Province of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, as one country known as the Dominion of Canada. This was Confederation, and was a massive part of Canadian history, for it is the day that Canada was created. Confederation turned The Colony of the United Province of Canada, into two new provinces; Ontario and Quebec, and also turned the colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia into provinces. There were four provinces all together in the beginning of Canada. Each of these Provinces would keep some power over itself in a provincial government then transfer some of their power to a central government in Ottawa, Ontario, which would deal with the larger problems concerning all of the provinces. As time went by many other colonies joined Confederation such as Manitoba and the North West Territories on July 15, 1817, British Columbia on July 20, 1871, and Prince Edward Island on July 1, 1873. In modern day, on July 1 each year Canadians celebrate Canada Day, to remember the day the four colonies, of British North America, united to form one country. July 1st is the birthday of Canada. On this website you will learn about the four colonies involved in Confederation, and also about the main resons that it occured, I hope you enjoy it.
