The Colony of New Brunswick
New Brunswick was the second Maritime colony to join Confederation (was located beside Nova Scotia. See the maps below for a visual). The main political leaders of the colony were Sir Samuel Tilley, and A.J. Smith. Although Samuel Tilley was in favour of Confederation, many citizens were not as enthusiastic at all about the idea. They thought that the Economy in New Brunswick was doing very well, and more trading between colonies would not help much. They had no real desire for western expansion because they had enough land to satisfy themselves in there own colony. As well, the citizens were afraid that if New Brunswick became part of Confederation, they would have little influence on the government because of the fact that the Government would be based on representation by population, and New Brunswick had a very small population. Even through all of the ideas the citizens had about Confederation, Samuel Tilley went ahead with his standpoint of being in favour of Confederation, and put New Brunswick into the Dominion of Canada on the influence of the Governor of the colony, saying that they should unite with the other colonies.
