Sir John A. Macdonald
John A. Macdonald is one of the greatest known Canadians in the history of Canada. The reasons for this being that he was one of main people, who helped create Canada, and also was appointed as the first Prime Minister of Canada. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1815, and moved to Kingston, Upper Canada at the young age of five. He lived his life in Canada, and at the age of 19 opened his own law office. From there he moved into Canadian Politics and became the leader of the Liberal-Conservative Party in Canada West. As his years of politics wore on, the instability of the Province of Canada’s government lead to the Great Coalition in 1864, which Macdonald was part of, along with George Cartier, and George Brown. This coalition greatly helped Confederation move along. As well, Macdonald went to both the Charlottetown Conference and the Quebec conference to help make Confederation happen, on his way to becoming Prime Minister. After being asked to be the prime minister of the Dominion of Canada, he added many more provinces to the country and also began working on an inter-colonial railway. Sir John A. Macdonald held the position of prime minister for almost the rest of his life, until he was forced to resign for dishonourable behavior.
