Glossary
Coalition: An alliance, often a temporary one, of two or more people, factions, nations, or in the case of the Great Coalition; parties.
Colonies: A group of emigrants or their descendants, who leaves their native country to settle in a distant territory but remains closely associated or under the power of their home land.
Dominion: A land governed by one ruler, or a central government.
Majority: Made when a party wins more than half the seats in the House of Commons or a legislative assembly. A majority government can pass legislation and maintain the confidence of the House of Commons or legislative assembly, meaning they will stay in power much longer.
Maritime: a place of, relating to, or adjacent to an ocean or sea. In this case it is a maritime province, because it is the coast of Canada and is adjacent to the ocean.
Representation by Population: A term which explains how the seats in the central government of Canada would be distributed throughout each province to give them the proper amount of influence on governmental decisions. This means that the larger the population of a province the greater the amount of seats will be given to politicians from that province.
Tariffs: A tax made by governments, which is put on imports and sometimes exports. In case of the heavy tariffs in the U.S., they are taxes placed on the goods used for trading, that come out of Canada.
