The Colony of the United Province of Canada
(left) A map showing the Colony of the Province of Canada and its surrounding colonies.
The colony of the Province of Canada was one of the three colonies that first joined confederation in 1867. It was made up of Canada East and Canada West, Which would ater be named Ontario and Quebec (see the progression on the maps farther below. It was an internal colony of Canada), after Confederation occurred. The political leaders within this colony in the 1860’s were Sir John A. Macdonald and George Brown in Canada West, and George-Etienne Cartier and Antoine-Aimè Dorion in Canada East. The colony was originally split into Upper Canada and Lower Canada but after the Lord Durham Report in 1839, it was made into Canada East and Canada West uniting the to unions.
The greater part of the colony of Canada was in favour for Confederation and is a large reason Confederation ever happened. The government in the province of Canada formed the Great Coalition, and the parties involved and the citizens in the colony were pushing for confederation because of the heavy tariffs placed on trading products to the U.S., they wanted other colonies to help out if the U.S. attempted to invade Canada West, and also the colony wanted to expand to Rupert’s Land and thought the other colonies would be useful in doing this. These were the main reasons the United province of Canada wanted confederation.
