(above) The three party leaders who were part of the Great Coalition.
Reason One: Political deadlock and the Great coalition, in the Province of Canada.
There were two parties on the legislative assembly from both, Canada East and Canada West. To form a government that had a majority, at least two of these parties had to form a partnership (coalition). There were two coalitions in the assembly; one was the Liberal-conservatives from Canada West with the Parti Bleu of Canada East, and the other was the reform party from Canada West with the Parti Rouge from Canada East. Because of how closely these coalitions were balanced, there was often political deadlock when making decisions that concerned the province. However, in 1864 George brown of the Reform party joined the coalition of the Liberal-conservatives and the Parti Bleu to form the Great Coalition. The parties in the Great Coalition wanted to form a federal government and as well give both Canada East and West there own Provincial governments. They then thought of joining the Maritime colonies in this system and thus creating a union with them. This is one of the huge reasons Confederation occurred.
