Reason 3: United States ended free trade between British North America and themselves.
There had been free trade between BNA (British North America) and the U.S. from 1854 to 1865 and this trade had become a large part of the economy of many colonies during that time. The colonies had stronger trade ties with the United States then with each other, meaning that if free trade was taken away then it would be a very large problem for many colonies. If the colonies were to join together then they could have free trade with no tariffs between each other. This was one of the big benefits of Confederation
